Chapter 14
They ended up divided between two cars, and the agreement was that Al with Mike in Martha's car would go first and Mrs Webb with Martha and Amelia would follow. Destination: Harbour. But they got only to the first roundabout when Mrs Webb hit the brakes.
'Here you are,' Mrs Webb yelled.
Martha jerked.
'Liz, you can't stop here, just before the roundabout,' Martha protested. 'Go on and turn around.'
'Nonsense, there is no one here,' Mrs Webb grumbled, but got the car going again. 'If you insist.'
'I also insist,' Amelia piped from the back seat. The window on driver's side opened.
'Adam,' Mrs Webb yelled. 'Wait for me over there, I'm coming.'
She sped around the roundabout a little too fast for comfort. Amelia's stomach bounced against the bottom of her chest like a yo-yo. She covered her mouth.
Thank goodness, it lasted only a moment, and Mrs Webb pulled the car on the other side of the street, probably still too close to the roundabout, but Amelia wasn't in the mood to point it out. After all, she didn't even have a driver's license.
'There you are, Adam Oates,' Mrs Webb said jovially, climbing out of the car without checking if the road was safe to step onto. 'How are you doing these days?'
Martha got out, too, fortunately, straight onto the pavement.
Amelia just shook her head in disapproval of people dismissive of road safety. She wasn't going to get out of the car, she had to recover from the reckless driving. But she did open the window. After all, this would save them time on having to update Amelia.
'Good morning, Mrs Webb,' Adam Oats said politely, but his face was furrowed. He kept his hands shoved into the pockets of his jeans. Borderline rude, if anyone asked Amelia, even if no handshake was expected.
'Good afternoon, or morning. Ha! Time flies so fast when you're having fun with friends,' Mrs Webb rattled. 'It's good to be free to go out again, isn't it? How are Kaylie and the little ones? Is everything going well with, you know...' she paused and patted herself on her abdomen.
'Not sure about your stomach, but all is good with our new coming baby,' Adam replied. 'Thank you for asking, Mrs Webb. Is there a reason why you're stopping me?'
'Have you met my friend, Martha?' Mrs Webb turned to point at Martha. 'And over there in the car is Amy. She's Ryan's girlfriend, you know?'
Amelia bit her upper lip. What was Mrs Webb doing?
'Yes, I know, Ms Grant,' Adam said, and nodded at Martha. 'She has a bookshop in town. And I've seen Amelia around with Ryan. What can I do for you, Mrs Webb?'
'Oh, nothing; just wondered how you're doing given you're one of the key suspects in the current case.'
Not that again! Amelia opened the car door and stepped out.
'Am I?' Adam asked mildly surprised. 'Ryan told me that he had seen me in the pub, and he spoke also with my missus. She knows I was home for the rest of the night.
